New premises for APL, MOL Technology and Fredericia Shipyard

eyefortransport:
APL shifts its US HQ; MOL moves its Technology Research Centre in Japan; Fredericia Shipyard moves to Lindø.

APL will relocate its American regional HQ to Phoenix, Arizona. The move is expected to take place during the third quarter.

The regional HQ will co-ordinate the company's shipping, terminals and logistics activities throughout the Americas. This includes everything from marine operations to intermodal transportation.

The MOL Technology Research Centre will relocate from its current site in Nishikojiya, Ota Ward, Tokyo, to a facility currently under construction in Aso Ward in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The new research centre, which will be an environment-friendly facility using energy-saving technologies, will conduct a range of productive research activities and function as a core of MOL Group R&D aimed at promoting environmental protection and reducing vessel operating costs.

Fredericia Shipyard has entered into a 25-year agreement with Odense Steel Shipyard to rent the original dock facilities at Lindø as well as a number of admin and workshop buildings.

Fredericia Shipyard will have more than 100,000 m2 at its disposal.

Ocean rates continue to drop

Logistics News:

Ocean rates are continuing to drop especially on the Eastbound Transpacific trade lane.

According to an article on the JOC, the latest data from Drewry Shipping consultants shows that the average spot rate from Hong Kong to Los Angeles is now at $986 for an FEU. This represents a decrease of 51.6 percent compared to one year ago.

We are definitely seeing a race to the bottom in terms of ocean rates. With volumes down substantially and thousands of empty containers sitting on idle vessels all over the globe, many carriers are scrambling to fill vessels. From an NVOCC perspective, I am seeing many importers testing the waters in terms of what rate levels the current market will bear. Unfortunately (for many 3PL providers), with the economic downturn, I am seeing many customers using pricing as the main deciding factor when choosing new freight forwarding service offerings.

MISC pulls out of Grand Alliance

MISC Berhad has notified its Grand Alliance partners of its intention to withdraw from the group, effective Jan 1st, 2010.

MISC will withdraw from services between the Far East and Europe & the Mediterranean.

The carrier does not operate with the Grand Alliance on the Transpacific or Transatlantic trades.

This effectively means that MISC will become an Intra-Asia operator.

The Grand Alliance says that MISC's withdrawal will not affect sailing frequencies, transit times or service structures.

The Grand Alliance fleet comprises about 140 vessels with capacities of between 2,900 and 9,000 TEU, seven of which are provided by MISC.

The remaining alliance partners, Hapag-Lloyd, OOCL and NYK, will replace these ships in the context of the alliance's normal cascading.
