India Plans to Seek Private Funds for Seven New Ports

India will seek private funds for seven new ports costing 350 billion rupees ($7.6 billion) as the government tackles transport bottlenecks that are hindering plans to triple exports of agricultural and manufactured goods.
About two-thirds of the funds for the new ports will be raised from private sector, Rakesh Srivastava , joint secretary at the Ministry of Shipping, said yesterday in a telephone interview in New Delhi. The government has sent the proposal for the harbors to seven Indian states, Srivastava said without specifying a timeframe for starting the projects.
The new ports are part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's plan to spend as much as $1 trillion to upgrade the country's infrastructure by 2017. APM Terminals , the container-terminal arm of AP Moeller-Maersk A/S, and Dubai-based DP World Ltd. (DPW) are among the companies that have invested in India's harbors amid the government's push for private participation.
“ More ports will definitely help remove trade bottlenecks ,” said Rahul R. Pathak , principal consultant at Mumbai-based Mantrana Maritime Advisory Pvt., which provides consulting to shipping lines and port operators. “ But the government has to ensure that they all don't end up competing for the same basket of goods.”
The average turnaround time for ships at Indian ports was about 4.4 days in the year ended in March 2010, compared with about six hours in Singapore and Hong Kong, according to the trade ministry.
India currently has 13 so-called major ports that are administered by the federal government. They together handled 561 million tons of cargo in the year ended in March 2010, according to official data.
The government plans to boost the major ports' annual capacity to 1.46 billion tons by March 2020 from 616.7 million tons as of March 2010, according to the shipping ministry. About 90 percent of India's international trade by volume is carried through sea.
Asia's third-largest economy aims to triple its exports of gems and jewelry, textiles, autoparts and other goods to $750 billion by March 2017 from $225 billion last year, according to the trade ministry.
Srivastava said the seven states need to set aside about 2,500 acres (1,011 hectares) of land for each new port.

Oman-Port of Salalah Receives Maiden Call from Global Shipping Line CSAV
Port of Salalah has received the maiden call from global shipping line CSAV (CompañíaSud Americana de Vapores). CSAV is a Chilean shipping company operating across all the continents in container, bulk and car carrier vessels. They are one of the oldest and most respected liner companies in the world today.
The M/V Pucon a 304 metre, 6,500 TEU (20 foot equivalent container units) container vessel called at Salalah on Tuesday en route from India to northern Europe. In laymen's terms, the cargo on the MV Pucon if laid end to end would be the equivalent of five times the length of the world's tallest building the Burj Khalifa. With 25 of the world's largest cranes, Port of Salalah is in fact built to handle double this size of cargo on a single vessel.
The vessel will be calling at Salalah in both directions on a monthly rotation as part of an Asia-Europe-Asia service. The vessel crew met Ahmed Akaak, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Port of Salalah, and senior members of the port management. The captain received a commemorative plaque to mark the vessel's maiden call at Salalah. Peter Ford, Chief Executive Officer for Port of Salalah said: “We are delighted to welcome CSAV to Salalah and receive the maiden call from its vessel the MV Pucon. ”
The addition of CSAV as a customer to the Port of Salalah will add to the number of markets and options that businesses, both local and international, have when using Salalah as a distribution or manufacturing base. “We are in further negotiations with a number of other key liner companies whose regional and global shipping networks will be greatly enhanced by using the strategic location Salalah offers.”

ETIHAD OUTLINES EXPANSION PLANS

ETIHAD OUTLINES EXPANSION PLANS

ETIHAD Crystal Cargo is running its new 777F on six-weekly Abu Dhabi (UAE) to China to India to Abu Dhabi routes, senior vice-president Roy Kinnear has told Air Cargo News.

The carrier has been reaching out into new markets, including Kazakhstan, where it launched an A330 freighter operation at the end of July.

“Part of our interest in terms of developing trade and commercial ties between the UAE and Kazakhstan has been to launch dedicated freighter route, to complement our existing passenger operations. We believe the new dedicated cargo route will be successful and that there is sufficient demand in our network for this to be a profitable route,” Kinnear said.

“Having analysed the demand into Almaty and growth, we believe there was scope for this new A330 Freighter operation and we will review additional frequency in the future based on performance.”

Etihad has not tapped into neighbouring Russia as of yet, with the exception of cargo capacity on Etihad’s narrowbody passenger services into Moscow.

“Russia continues to grow as an import market, and in time we anticipate a growing export market. It would be wrong to over generalise about Russia as a whole as each region and metropolis has its own distinct economic, sociological and cultural background.”

The major obstacles for airfreight in this region, Kinnear pointed out, are the current directional imbalances with imports outweighing airfreight compatible exports.

Etihad Crystal Cargo grew 32 per cent in the first half of this year on the back of a 21 per cent capacity increase.

India-Call to Focus on Shipping Potential

The government is working on a plan to develop coastal shipping into a vibrant economic activity in the State, Minister for Ports K. Babu has said.
In a communication issued by his office on Saturday, Mr. Babu said the State had a great potential for coastal shipping.
The State had one major port in Kochi and 17 minor ports and its coast was close to the international shipping route. So, the State's ports can play a vital role in the nation's overall shipping activity. Goods movement through the Kochi port increased by 12.52 per cent (over the previous year's figure) to touch 174.29 lakh tons. International cargo traffic increased by 11.08 per cent and cargo traffic within the country by 15.63 per cent through this port this year.
This trend indicated the emerging significance of shipping in Kerala. If the State could develop the minor ports and link them using by small cargo vessels, it could indeed grow into a vibrant economic activity.
The State also had a network of inland waterways, over 1,647 km in length. These waterways connected all the industrial and commercial centres in the State. A major portion of the cargo movement now happening along the roads could be routed along the waterways if the waterways could be developed and maintained.
The coastal shipping project the government was drawing up would target, in the first stage, the diversion of at least 20 per cent of the total cargo movement now happening along the State's roads through the waterways.

THE threat of a night-time ban on flights to and from German airports collectively, as well as Manston Airport in the UK, is prompting serious questions about the viability of airfreight serving these markets.

A court in Leipzig (Germany) will soon decide whether to allow an appeal calling for a complete ban on night flights in the autumn. The news comes as a sore blow to Frankfurt, which is gearing up for the opening of its new landing strip.

Lufthansa sees this decision as a barrier to booming business between the Middle East and Europe.

“Gulf states want to replace Europe as a freight hub. We need internationally competitive operating times and that means night flights,” Lufthansa chief executive officer Christoph Franz said.

Lufthansa has had its scuffles with Middle Eastern carriers, reportedly asking the government to deny them landing slots at Berlin’s new airport. Emirates has been pushing to get landing rights in Berlin and Stuttgart, in addition to its existing German destinations.

In the UK the Labour Group on Thanet District Council are hoping to impose restrictions on flights to and from Manston Airport.

A night curfew could cost the airport 67,000 tonnes of cargo each year, making business unviable. Because of the loss of trade due to restricting night flights, Manston’s potential to create jobs will be cut by almost half, from over 2,000 people directly employed in airport activities to 1,102 jobs by 2018.

“Restricting our operating hours will fundamentally affect the economic viability of the airport. It will reduce our ability to attract passenger and freight services and secure based airlines, which would offer a greater range and frequency of scheduled passenger services,” Charles Buchanan, chief executive officer of Manston Airport, said

Asia LNG to boost demand for tanker orders

Asia LNG to boost demand for tanker orders

Asia LNG Demand Boosts Tanker Orders
Orders for liquefied natural gas tankers in the high with the supply of natural gas (LNG) from Qatar, Peru and the new three times the day rates for such ships is now pointing to the peak demand in 2014-15 after years of poor sales.
This has motivated the expansion in demand from Norway, Sweden and Greece, which flourished in the past months 3-6 after the slowdown in the past decade, with employment rates of shippers feeling growing days.
This has led to a new LNG supply from Qatar and Peru to increase the demand for the product to buyers in Asia and South America, stretching the capacity of the aging fleet, which puts upward pressure on prices and the availability of pressure is also linked to these carriers to longer routes.
Stimulate rates of today are the prices of spot LNG in Europe, $ 9 per million British thermal units (million units) compared to $ 15 in Asia.
Difficult times for the nuclear sector after the earthquake that hit Japan on March 11 and the tsunami have also been developed for natural gas (LNG) in the spotlight as an alternative fuel, and increased the reduced availability of tankers.
Doubled three times daily for rates of 110,000 / $ a day since mid-2010 as a result, with further increases expected later this year. set orderbooks swelling in the shipyards, South Korea to expand the solid phase of the fleet of liquefied natural gas in coming years.
Even after the current orderbook of 56 units is not enough to bridge the gap between supply and demand.
This is partly because dozens of aging tankers nearing the end of their productive lives.
It is said that the shipyards to hit the ability to deliver the 2013, with the increasing orders to shift the focus to 2014/15 which is the point of peak demand.
"Basics of LNG shipping in the sub is very good for mid-term outlook" , said Michael Rowley, Director of Business Administration in LNG shipping lines Mitsui OSK. The company operates about 20 percent of the world fleet.
"The upward trend in demand for shipping - I will remain positive for the next 12-18 months."
BIG Australian expansion
One risk to the outlook is rosy for the delay or cancellation of a large list of projects planned liquefied natural gas, particularly in Australia.
"As long as projects scheduled to come on stream, then there should be plenty of demand even with the 20 or so orders there is speculation" , said Rowley.
Great is the appointment of new production plants spread across the Australian coast to begin operation in 2015 for the employment of the tanker fleet expanded.
And provided that the basins and Australia in one leap more than double production to 42 million tons / year, which would virtually guarantee rates upward continuously.
More than 40-45 are needed for the transfer of Australian sizes of ships is expected by the year 2015, compared to 10/05 with the airlines that are currently linked only to those projects, according to an analysis of securities in the Arctic.
In a sign that demand in the future, South Korea announced a long-term agreements on Wednesday worth $ 84 billion company with Royal Dutch Shell and Total to buy gas from LNG projects in Australia.
Continued demand for natural gas (LNG) to improve despite the darkening economic background, a situation almost certain to reduce crude oil and European gas burning.
This is partly because of stable demand from Asian economies and South American and local rise in energy consumption.
Has been growing interest in natural gas (LNG) in the field of maritime transport more than the appearance of the major lenders are willing to ensure the coverage of these invasions, while reducing the demand for dry bulk and other shipping lines helped redirect investments to market the latest boom.
Confirms the dismal state of the crude oil tanker in the market, said Chief Executive Officer of Frontline, the world's independent tanker operator, told Reuters this week that there is confidence had reached its lowest level on record.
Banks are betting heavily on a revival in the fortunes of the shipping industry of natural gas (LNG), to the extent of support so I stayed speculation worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
These are deals where the airline planned cost of any direct or guaranteed returns of long-term contract.
DNB NOR Norway's largest bank in talks to finance up to $ 4 billion of new tanker built in the six months to December 31, 2011, due in part to the high number of speculative applications.
He rose and new building orders from shipyards in recent months, as provided by the Greek ship owners and some Scandinavian Jump to transport natural gas (LNG) for the first time.
The latest deal by a group of George Economou in Cardiff Marine LNG four takes the number of vessels ordered by Greece on the basis of the owners since the beginning of the year to 21. Many of the commands the last 25 are stayed speculation aims to reap the benefits of fat are increasingly returns leasing the spot market, where rates show little sign after running out of steam.
Swedish Stena Bulk shipper sees rates exceeding $ 130,000 / day this year before climbing on the back of further tightening to provide approximately the middle part of the contract.
In another sign of change, and banks are also part in the financing of speculators, which is a far cry from the peripheral position occupied by many of the past decade.
It is expected a few big downsides even new construction, like many of the ships that are replacing aging out of the service.
"The Greeks are investing in shipping due to high prices and the face of aging ships retirement comes as the new product in the market , "believes one source of shipment.
Between 55 and 62 tankers - nearly a fifth of the world fleet - is facing retirement in 2014 through the enactment of and against the backdrop of tightening safety regulations and environment which makes them less competitive in the work.
Tanker operators prepare for the impending crisis management capacity by converting a vector of aging in the more profitable and floating storage units returned and, where possible, activate the defunct carriers.
In the heart is a large spread between Europe and Asia, which is now leading the demand for new shipping capacity.
As long as traders see the benefit in the transfer of the east Atlantic shipping and production remain rare.

SKYCARGO SEES INDIAN EXPORTS COOL

SKYCARGO SEES INDIAN EXPORTS COOL

MIDDLE Eastern cargo powerhouse Emirates SkyCargo expects India’s export engine to cool during this current financial year.

The carrier saw cargo grow 14 per cent on the outbound stretch in the 2010-11 financial year, but this year it anticipates a more modest seven to eight per cent increase.

“India has always been a good market for us. The exports have been growing, but this year there could be a slowdown in growth. Outbound cargo is expected to grow at seven to eight per cent,” Keki Patel, Emirates cargo manager for India and Nepal, said.

“Imports have also been steadily improving,” Patel added. “About a decade ago, air cargo industry in India was suffering from directional imbalance, which meant exports were high but imports were lower. This meant that flights came in empty to carry out the exports. But in the past two to three years there is a balance that has come in.”

Airports at certain smaller Indian cities do not have a customs clearance facility, meaning goods from these stations need to be transferred to Delhi, Mumbai or Chennai for export.

Maersk Line tops Drewry list

Maersk Line tops Drewry list

The Drewry Shipping Consultants’ Schedule Reliability Insight report covering April to June 2011 puts Maersk Line back on top in terms of reliability among the largest 20 lines with an average score of 75.9 %.

Industry reliability across the major trades quarter-on-quarter has shown a quite impressive increase. The transatlantic trade posted a 16 percentage point jump to 68 %; the transpacific trade up five points to 60 %; and the Asia–Europe up 13 points to 62 %. This contributed to an industry average of 56 % schedule reliability for the quarter.

Could this be an indication that the industry is taking note of Maersk Line CEO Eivind Kolding’s call to action in his New Normal manifesto?

Possibly, and Maersk Line’s performance over the quarter is certainly a great example of ‘practice what you preach’. The 75.9 % average score is 20 percentage points higher than the industry average and 18 points higher than the average of the top 20 lines. Competitors APL and CSAV followed with scores of 74.2 % and 70.5 % respectively.

On its own operated services, i.e. excluding vessel share agreements and slot charters, Maersk Line posted 82.3 % reliability.

Reliability a topical issue

“The improved reliability scores achieved by virtually all of the major lines is welcome news,” said Schedule Reliability Insight editor Simon Heaney.

“Reliability is certainly a topical issue following Maersk Line chief executive’s Eivind Kolding’s call for a revolution within the industry towards a more customer-focused approach with quality service and ease of transaction at the fore.”

OSX Brasil SA to Add 14 More FPSO Vessels to Its Fleet
OSX Brasil SA to Add 14 More FPSO Vessels to Its Fleet
OSX Brasil SA, the Brazilian oil services company controlled by billionaire Eike Batista, expects to add 14 more floating production vessels to its fleet as Batista's company develops South American oilfields. OGX Petroleo & Gas Participacoes SA plans to operate by 2019 19 floating production and storage units that will be leased from OSX, Carlos Eduardo Bellot, a director at OSX said today in Singapore. OSX has orders to convert five of the 19 from crude ships, with the first one completed by Keppel Corp. of Singapore.
OSX received a license last month allowing it to build a shipyard in Rio de Janeiro state and will work on some of the conversions of the floating production units when it starts operations in the first quarter of 2013. The first unit built by Keppel will start producing oil in November at the Waimea field in Brazil.
“Keppel will work on converting OSX's second floating production vessel“ , Bellot said. “Contracts for the remaining three haven't been awarded yet“ , he said.
OSX plans to focus on building offshore products, including drill ships and floating production and storage vessels, at its Brazilian shipyard, Bellot said. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world's largest shipyard, owns a 10 percent stake in OSX's shipyard
OSX sees total demand for rigs and platforms in Brazil at about $200 billion over the next 15 years. Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PETR4), Brazil's state-controlled oil producer, is doubling its deep-water fleet to tackle projects in the Atlantic Ocean, including the 6.5-billion-barrel Lula field, the largest discovery in the Americas in more than three decades.

India: Major Ports Adopt New Contracting Method to Dredge Harbours

India: Major Ports Adopt New Contracting Method to Dredge Harbours

India-Major Ports Adopt New Contracting Method to Dredge Harbours
Major state-owned ports are switching to a new contracting method to dredge harbours to attain the depths required to dock bigger vessels, which could cost more to deepen and maintain the shipping channels.
“ The assured depth method of undertaking dredging works will form part of the new dredging policy to be finalized soon by the government ,” said Rakesh Srivastava , joint secretary looking after ports in the shipping ministry. “Assured depth is a much better method of undertaking dredging works. The ports may have to spend more on dredging under this method, but it is beneficial to them.”
Major ports, or those controlled by the Union government, have been following the unit rate method for dredging where a contractor is paid on the quantity or volume of materials dug out from the seabed and measured in cubic metres.
The quantity to be dredged to reach a certain depth is estimated by the ports based on studies by specialized agencies.
In the assured depth method, a contractor is paid only after he reaches the specified depth irrespective of the quantity dredged.
“ You will never get the desired depth in case of dredging contracts based on the unit-rate method, ” said M. Guruprasad Rai , chief engineer of Cochin port, which suffered delays on a channel deepening work at its Vallarpadam container transshipment terminal earlier this year. This is because as soon as a contractor dredges the volume agreed on, he stops work irrespective of whether the depth needed by the port is achieved or not, he added.
India's major ports plan to spend as much as Rs.10,000 crore till 2020 to deepen and maintain shipping channels to accommodate bigger vessels, according to the maritime agenda for the decade announced by the shipping ministry on 13 January.
“T he drafts (depth) at major ports (both in the channels and at berths) have historically been very low and not commensurate with the developments taking place in the world in terms of change in ship sizes, higher parcel sizes, changes in cargo trends, such as containerization, project cargoes, etc., ” the 10-year plan said.
Ports are required to increase the drafts to at least 14m and up to 17m, according to the potential of bigger size vessels calling a particular port, it said.
Jawaharlal Nehru port is the first to adopt the new method of dredging contracts ahead of the finalization of the policy, shipping ministry's Srivastava said.
India's busiest container port is adopting the assured depth method for a Rs.1,212.5 crore project to widen and deepen its channel, a key factor in its expansion plans.
A public tender floated by the port in May for the contract has attracted five initial bids including from state-run Dredging Corp. of India Ltd , a joint venture of Dredging International NV and Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contracting Co. NV; Jan De Nul NV; Royal Boskalis Westminster NV; and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd.
In the new model, it is the contactor's responsibility to ensure the assured depth even if he encounters any unexpected additional geological hurdles, said PY Deshmukh, chief manager for planning and development at Jawaharlal Nehru port.
An executive at one of the Dutch dredging firms bidding for the contract said the assured depth model will raise dredging costs because of the higher risk for contractors.
“ Under this method, the risk involved in undertaking the work is totally transferred to the contractor, ” the executive said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak with the media. “ When the contractor's risk increases, he will ask for more money.”
But the new model will help ports finalize a dredging budget without the need to go for cost revisions later, a practice common under the unit rate method, said Cochin port's chief engineer Rai. Cochin port had to scrap the contract given to a private dredging firm for the Vallarpadam trans-shipment terminal and hire a new contractor to complete the unfinished job, he added.

TURKISH TO LAUNCH LAGOS LEG

TURKISH Airlines has applied to the Ministry of Aviation in Abuja (Nigeria) for approval to operate scheduled cargo operations between Lagos (Nigeria) and Istanbul (Turkey).

The route could run from as early as September Ali Bulut, managing director of Turkish Airlines, said.

“What we want to do is [a] once a week flight, but after two or three months, the frequencies can be increased to either two or three flights per week depending on the patronage. Our study reveals that Lagos-Istanbul does not have much cargo, but Istanbul-Lagos is regularly high with cargo. So, it is an avenue we are looking to tap into,” Bulut explained.

WFS ACQUIRES MONTREAL CARGO ASSETS

WFS ACQUIRES MONTREAL CARGO ASSETS

FOLLOWING the purchase of assets belonging to Excel Cargo at both Montreal’s (Canada) Dorval and Mirabel airports, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has become the largest cargo handler in the city.

The combined operation of both airports, including the existing WFS operation at Dorval, will have close to 150 employees and will function under the WFS name and brand.

Since January 2011, WFS has been awarded 24 new cargo contracts in North America worth US$11 million and retained a further 10 contracts that were part of competitive bid processes.

In Canada WFS also provides handling in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

“This acquisition provides the opportunity to develop not only our customer base to include numerous freight forwarders, but also to expand our service offerings with the addition of cargo running at Dorval and ramp and warehouse handling at Mirabel,” Olivier Bijaoui, President & CEO of WFS, said:

On completion of the takeover WFS’ existing customers British Airways, Finnair, Forwardair and US Airways transferred operations into the larger Excel premises at Dorval, adjacent to Customs, to achieve greater efficiency. The new operation will continue to provide services to Excel’s Dorval airline customers: Aer Lingus, Air Transat, CSA, Cubana, First Air, Qantas and SAS as well as to more than 45 freight forwarding organisations.

WFS says customers will benefit from access to these larger facilities and to the x-ray equipment for cargo screening that will be transferred. More than 2,700 tonnes of airfreight per month will be handled in the new Dorval operation.

In related news, WFS has recently appointed Michel Defays as senior vice-president

Malaysia: Flag States Sign Declaration Condemning Acts of Violence Against Seafarers

Malaysia: Flag States Sign Declaration Condemning Acts of Violence Against Seafarers
Malaysia-Flag States Sign Declaration Condemning Acts of Violence Against Seafarers
Three of the largest flag states, accounting for around 40% of the world's commercial shipping tonnage, have signed an agreement condemning the acts of violence against seafarers by pirates. The flag states agreed to pool information on the mistreatment of seafarers at the hands of pirates.
The flag states signed a Declaration in Washington on 3 August 2011, condemning the acts of violence against seafarers. The Declaration recognised that the increasing use of violence against captured seafarers was underreported and noted that there were significant sensitivities associated with such information.
The Declaration affirmed their commitment to provide information on the levels of violence faced by seafarers to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) from reports received by them in accordance with their internal procedures.
The IMB will collate and disseminate aggregated data of the levels of violence. The reports will omit their names, the names of the vessels, owners, operators and flag states to protect identities and privacy.
The project is supported by the One Earth Future Foundation (OEFF) and the TK Foundation.
So far in 2011, there have been 176 attacks on vessels by suspected Somali pirates which resulted in 22 successful hijackings with 378 crew taken hostage. Taking into account those vessels hijacked in 2010 which remain unreleased, there are presently 20 vessels still held off Somalia with a total of 398 crew still held to ransom.
IMB Director Pottengal Mukundan commented: “This new initiative will help to publicise the human cost of piracy, which at times can go unnoticed amongst reports of hijacking and huge ransoms. Current figures for 2011 suggest that the number of worldwide piratical incidents is on course to match or surpass those for 2010- though currently, attacks off Somalia account for a greater percentage of worldwide attacks than in previous years.”
This agreement is a result of the OEFF's Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) working group, which in June 2011 produced the Human Cost of Piracy Report. The OBP report found that thousands of seafarers were subjected to gunfire, beatings, confinement and in some cases torture, though these cases were underreported and misunderstood by the public.
Mr Mukundan continued: “Attacks reported off Somalia this year have been characterised by a greater degree of violence against crew than before. Also, there have been worrying reports of violent attacks on crew during hijackings of vessels in the Gulf of Guinea. These intimidating and sometimes brutal attacks on crew must end – hopefully we can bring these instances to wider public attention as a result of this Declaration.”
The total number of attacks worldwide stands at 304, with 31 successful hijackings.

IMB strongly urges all shipmasters and owners to continue to report all worldwide actual, attempted or suspicious piracy and armed robbery incidents to the IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre.

CHARTERS ANSWER HORN OF AFRICA’S CALL

CHARTERS ANSWER HORN OF AFRICA’S CALL

10-Aug-2011

CHARTER brokers are seeing a huge increase in demand for charters to carry desperately needed humanitarian aid for the starving people of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Air Charter Service sent its first aid flight on 19 July carrying cargo such as tents from Asia and medical supplies from Europe. It has been sending either a 747 or an MD-11F once a day or every other day since.

“North eastern Kenya has experienced the added hardship of growing numbers of refugees – every day between 1,000 and 1,500 Somalis cross the Kenyan border to the largest refugee settlement in the world, Dadaab, where there are already close to 400,000 people. The medical supplies are desperately needed, and the tents that we are bringing in will go some way to helping to house these extra people.” Justin Lancaster, cargo sales director for ACS Group, commented.

Since 24 July Chapman Freeborn Airchartering has overseen the delivery of hundreds of tons of relief cargo from Europe and the Middle East on behalf of charities and international aid agency clients.

Aid cargo has been flown into airports including Nairobi (Kenya), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Mogadishu (Somalia) utilising full and part charters on IL-76, 767 and 747 aircraft

KOREAN SHOWS MIXED RESULTS

09-Aug-2011

KOREAN Air’s operating revenue for the second quarter rose 1.5 per cent to KRW2.83 trillion (US$2.6 billion). However, the company ended up with an operating loss of KRW37.5 billion (US$3.4 million) for the period due to the high price of oil and slow outbound cargo traffic, which fell 30 per cent.

Cargo, which contributed 31.8 per cent to the company’s revenue, saw a drop of 8.4 per cent in freight tonne kilometres (FTK) to 2.29 billion (FTK). The airline blamed the drop on decreasing exports of IT products, although exports of auto parts and semiconductors rose.

Traffic from Europe, Japan and the US rose 12 per cent, 13 per cent and eight per cent respectively.

New cargo routes to destinations such as Qatar, Spain, transatlantic regions and Turkey were also added in the second quarter

Philippines-Cargo Ship Sinks After Collision with Another Vessel

Two crewmen were missing after a cargo ship sank in Sarangani Bay Tuesday evening following a collision with another vessel, officials said Wednesday.

Commodore Roy Echeverria, local Coast Guard station chief , said the smaller vessel M/V Bulk Carrier 1, which was bound for Dumaguete, sank when it collided with the Liberian-flagged container ship HS Puccini, which was heading toward this city from Davao City, around 7:42 pm some seven nautical miles off Maasim town in Sarangani province.

Jing Burgos, representative of M/V Bulk Carrier 1, told reporters that 23 crew members of the ill-fated ship, two of them in serious condition, were rescued. But two more crew members of M/V Bulk Carrier 1 remained missing, he said.

Echeverria said their operations were focused on finding the two missing men.

“As soon as the rescue operation is over, we will investigate what really caused the collision,” Echeverria said.

He said the Coast Guard was alerted to the collision Marco Krank, HS Puccini's captain, sent a distress call around 8:20 pm

Echeverria said he immediately dispatched a team to conduct search-and-rescue operations and to conduct an initial investigation.

The Coast Guard also sent out medical team and marine environmental protection personnel to contain a possible oil spill, he said.

Tuesday's collision was the second disaster in Sarangani Bay this year.

In May, the MV Double Prosperity, loaded with 66,000 tons of coal enroute to

India from Australia, ran ran aground seven kilometers off Kiamba town.
