TURKISH Airlines has applied to the Ministry of Aviation in Abuja (Nigeria) for approval to operate scheduled cargo operations between Lagos (Nigeria) and Istanbul (Turkey).

The route could run from as early as September Ali Bulut, managing director of Turkish Airlines, said.

“What we want to do is [a] once a week flight, but after two or three months, the frequencies can be increased to either two or three flights per week depending on the patronage. Our study reveals that Lagos-Istanbul does not have much cargo, but Istanbul-Lagos is regularly high with cargo. So, it is an avenue we are looking to tap into,” Bulut explained.

FOLLOWING the purchase of assets belonging to Excel Cargo at both Montreal’s (Canada) Dorval and Mirabel airports, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has become the largest cargo handler in the city.

The combined operation of both airports, including the existing WFS operation at Dorval, will have close to 150 employees and will function under the WFS name and brand.

Since January 2011, WFS has been awarded 24 new cargo contracts in North America worth US$11 million and retained a further 10 contracts that were part of competitive bid processes.

In Canada WFS also provides handling in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

“This acquisition provides the opportunity to develop not only our customer base to include numerous freight forwarders, but also to expand our service offerings with the addition of cargo running at Dorval and ramp and warehouse handling at Mirabel,” Olivier Bijaoui, President & CEO of WFS, said:

On completion of the takeover WFS’ existing customers British Airways, Finnair, Forwardair and US Airways transferred operations into the larger Excel premises at Dorval, adjacent to Customs, to achieve greater efficiency. The new operation will continue to provide services to Excel’s Dorval airline customers: Aer Lingus, Air Transat, CSA, Cubana, First Air, Qantas and SAS as well as to more than 45 freight forwarding organisations.

WFS says customers will benefit from access to these larger facilities and to the x-ray equipment for cargo screening that will be transferred. More than 2,700 tonnes of airfreight per month will be handled in the new Dorval operation.

Malaysia: Flag States Sign Declaration Condemning Acts of Violence Against Seafarers

Three of the largest flag states, accounting for around 40% of the world's commercial shipping tonnage, have signed an agreement condemning the acts of violence against seafarers by pirates. The flag states agreed to pool information on the mistreatment of seafarers at the hands of pirates.

The flag states signed a Declaration in Washington on 3 August 2011, condemning the acts of violence against seafarers. The Declaration recognised that the increasing use of violence against captured seafarers was underreported and noted that there were significant sensitivities associated with such information.

The Declaration affirmed their commitment to provide information on the levels of violence faced by seafarers to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) from reports received by them in accordance with their internal procedures.

The IMB will collate and disseminate aggregated data of the levels of violence. The reports will omit their names, the names of the vessels, owners, operators and flag states to protect identities and privacy.

The project is supported by the One Earth Future Foundation (OEFF) and the TK Foundation.

So far in 2011, there have been 176 attacks on vessels by suspected Somali pirates which resulted in 22 successful hijackings with 378 crew taken hostage. Taking into account those vessels hijacked in 2010 which remain unreleased, there are presently 20 vessels still held off Somalia with a total of 398 crew still held to ransom.

IMB Director Pottengal Mukundan commented: “This new initiative will help to publicise the human cost of piracy, which at times can go unnoticed amongst reports of hijacking and huge ransoms. Current figures for 2011 suggest that the number of worldwide piratical incidents is on course to match or surpass those for 2010- though currently, attacks off Somalia account for a greater percentage of worldwide attacks than in previous years.”

This agreement is a result of the OEFF's Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) working group, which in June 2011 produced the Human Cost of Piracy Report. The OBP report found that thousands of seafarers were subjected to gunfire, beatings, confinement and in some cases torture, though these cases were underreported and misunderstood by the public.

Mr Mukundan continued: “Attacks reported off Somalia this year have been characterised by a greater degree of violence against crew than before. Also, there have been worrying reports of violent attacks on crew during hijackings of vessels in the Gulf of Guinea. These intimidating and sometimes brutal attacks on crew must end – hopefully we can bring these instances to wider public attention as a result of this Declaration.”

The total number of attacks worldwide stands at 304, with 31 successful hijackings.

IMB strongly urges all shipmasters and owners to continue to report all worldwide actual, attempted or suspicious piracy and armed robbery incidents to the IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre.

كشفت هيئة مواني البحر عن قيام هيئة الصادرات الواردات بضبط حاويتين مصابتين بإشعاع ذري واردتين داخل سفن البضائع القادمة من اليابان للمرة الثالثة خلال 30 يومًا، والذي تم رفع درجات الاستعداد القصوى داخل الميناء.
كانت الحاويات التي تم ضبطهاوصلت منذ 30 يومًا ضمن 8 حاويات إلي الميناء قادمين من اليابان وبداخلها معدات كهربائية وميكانيكية والتي قامت باستيرادها شركتان للتصدير والاستيراد والذين حاولوا إخراج الحاويات ولكنهم فشلوا والتي أكدت هيئة الطاقة الذرية في خطاب لها لإدارة هيئة الصادرات والواردات بميناء السخنة إصابة الحاويتين بالإشعاع.
أكد المسئول بالميناء، قيام وزارة البيئة وإدارة البيئة بمواني دبي التي تدير الميناء بنقل الحاويات داخل منطقة ترابية لمنع انتقال الإشعاع إلي البضائع والسفن كما قررت هيئة مواني البحر الأحمر مراجعة جميع الرسائل القادمة من اليابان عبر الشركتين اللتين قامتا باستيراد الحاويات المشعة।

CHARTER brokers are seeing a huge increase in demand for charters to carry desperately needed humanitarian aid for the starving people of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Air Charter Service sent its first aid flight on 19 July carrying cargo such as tents from Asia and medical supplies from Europe. It has been sending either a 747 or an MD-11F once a day or every other day since.

“North eastern Kenya has experienced the added hardship of growing numbers of refugees – every day between 1,000 and 1,500 Somalis cross the Kenyan border to the largest refugee settlement in the world, Dadaab, where there are already close to 400,000 people. The medical supplies are desperately needed, and the tents that we are bringing in will go some way to helping to house these extra people.” Justin Lancaster, cargo sales director for ACS Group, commented.

Since 24 July Chapman Freeborn Airchartering has overseen the delivery of hundreds of tons of relief cargo from Europe and the Middle East on behalf of charities and international aid agency clients.

Aid cargo has been flown into airports including Nairobi (Kenya), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Mogadishu (Somalia) utilising full and part charters on IL-76, 767 and 747 aircraft

KOREAN Air’s operating revenue for the second quarter rose 1.5 per cent to KRW2.83 trillion (US$2.6 billion). However, the company ended up with an operating loss of KRW37.5 billion (US$3.4 million) for the period due to the high price of oil and slow outbound cargo traffic, which fell 30 per cent.

Cargo, which contributed 31.8 per cent to the company’s revenue, saw a drop of 8.4 per cent in freight tonne kilometres (FTK) to 2.29 billion (FTK). The airline blamed the drop on decreasing exports of IT products, although exports of auto parts and semiconductors rose.

Traffic from Europe, Japan and the US rose 12 per cent, 13 per cent and eight per cent respectively.

New cargo routes to destinations such as Qatar, Spain, transatlantic regions and Turkey were also added in the second quarter

Philippines: Cargo Ship Sinks After Collision with Another Vessel

Two crewmen were missing after a cargo ship sank in Sarangani Bay Tuesday evening following a collision with another vessel, officials said Wednesday.

Commodore Roy Echeverria, local Coast Guard station chief , said the smaller vessel M/V Bulk Carrier 1, which was bound for Dumaguete, sank when it collided with the Liberian-flagged container ship HS Puccini, which was heading toward this city from Davao City, around 7:42 pm some seven nautical miles off Maasim town in Sarangani province.

Jing Burgos, representative of M/V Bulk Carrier 1, told reporters that 23 crew members of the ill-fated ship, two of them in serious condition, were rescued. But two more crew members of M/V Bulk Carrier 1 remained missing, he said.

Echeverria said their operations were focused on finding the two missing men.

“As soon as the rescue operation is over, we will investigate what really caused the collision,” Echeverria said.

He said the Coast Guard was alerted to the collision Marco Krank, HS Puccini's captain, sent a distress call around 8:20 pm

Echeverria said he immediately dispatched a team to conduct search-and-rescue operations and to conduct an initial investigation.

The Coast Guard also sent out medical team and marine environmental protection personnel to contain a possible oil spill, he said.

Tuesday's collision was the second disaster in Sarangani Bay this year.

In May, the MV Double Prosperity, loaded with 66,000 tons of coal enroute to

India from Australia, ran ran aground seven kilometers off Kiamba town.
